Workshops

I offer bespoke One-to-One workshops, for all levels of photographers, with specific emphasis on beginners and intermediates.  We’re all unique, so I’m offering a day (or half day) of photography tuition, built specifically for you, based around your own skills and interests.

Based in Bristol, I have access to pretty much all of Mother Nature’s many and varied delights, including miles of easily accessible sandy coastline, waterfalls big and small, ancient woodland a plenty, as well as two of the country’s most iconic city skylines.

One of the things I particularly like about this area is that the landscape won’t necessarily do all the work for you… it’s up to us, as photographers, to try and meet it on its own terms, and listen to what it has to say.

Subject areas include:

Creative Photography:
I’ve been a leading practitioner of  “Creative Photography” ie Intentional Camera Movement and In Camera Multiple Exposures since 2012, and have been a regular contributor to the specialist Creative Photography Magazine “ICM Photo Mag” since its inception.  I love it for its ability to get to the “essence” of a place, a time, a feeling.  Finding a way into this genre can be quite a challenge to begin with, given the huge array of choices and options, but I can give you plenty of specialist hints, tips and practical advice as to how to get you blurring your reality like a goodun.

Shooting Water:
Water is very much my specialist subject.  Whether it’s the magnificent stretch of waterfalls around Pontneddfechan in the southern Brecon Beacons, the glorious sandy beaches of South Wales, or the Bristol Channel beaches of Weston, Brean, Burnham and beyond with their huge tidal ranges, the area has plenty to offer water shooters of all abilities.

Into the Woods:
Bristol, and the surrounding Somerset hills and levels, has some glorious, and easily accessible, ancient woodland.  Exploring the nooks and crannies, and finding some order in the chaos, is one of my favourite photographic challenges.

Town and Cityscapes:
Bristol and Bath have two of the most recognisable skylines in the country.  The Clifton Suspension Bridge is an awe inspiring creation, and the Georgian architecture in and around Bath draws visitors from all over the world.  Hugely rewarding places to explore with a camera.

Prices:
Full Day (8 hours):£250
Half Day (4 hours): £150

NB prices are based around us making our own way to/from/between the workshop venue(s), and bringing our own packed lunches if required!

Gear:
Bring what you have.  Part of the focus of the day will be to see if we can help you get the most you can from whatever camera you own.  If there’s something you don’t have that you would like to borrow (eg tripods, filters etc.), let me know, and I’ll see what I can do…

Locations:
To be discussed and decided between us, but as a starting point, expect anything within 50 or so miles of Bristol, although we might on occasion go further afield.  Potential locations include Bristol, Bath, Weston-super-Mare, Brean, Burnham on Sea, Somerset Levels, South Wales coast, Mendip Hills, Hartland Quay and the waterfalls of the southern Brecon Beacons…

Availability:
Due to the dayjob (I’m also an actor), I’m often around and available at surprisingly short notice (ie a few days notice, and often midweek as well as weekends).  Conversely, it’s often tricky to put things in the diary many months in advance, as it can be difficult to predict where work is likely to take me.  It may be that we stick something in the diary, and then move it if absolutely necessary if something unexpectedly turns up (at either of our ends), although I undertake to do whatever I can to try and avoid that happening.
